if you are interested in violin lessons for your child.
Before submitting an application, please carefully read the information below on this page, the fees & policy and FAQ pages. If you feel that your family and my violin studio would be an ideal match, I'd love to hear from you!
Please include:
- Your name, email address & phone number
- Your child's name, age and school year
- Is your child a complete beginner or has she/he had violin lessons before?
- If your child had violin lessons before: When did he/she first start? Where did he/she have lessons so far? Who was or were your child's previous teacher(s)? Were the lessons one-to-one or in a group?
- It is not necessary to have passed any graded exams, but if your child has done graded violin exams, please give the date of the most recent exam, exam board and result.
- Will your child be able to practise a minimum of 30 to 45 minutes daily, or 6 out 7 days a week on a regular basis?
- Will you be able to help your child with their daily practice, especially if your child is under 11?
- Which pieces/studies/etudes/scales is your child currently working on?
- Does your child have any other previous musical experience, such as any other instruments played, for how long and to which level, etc.?
- Please list all the days and times you and your child are available (earliest start time/latest end time of lesson). If you are limited to one day/time only, it is highly unlikely that I will be able to fit your child in.
- Please also state the lesson length required (rough guideline: beginner - Grade 3 level: 30 minutes, Grade 4 - 5 level 45 minutes, 45-60 minutes Grade 6 level and up)
When slots become available, I currently only accept:
- Complete beginners between the ages of 4 and 8 1/2 approx, whose parents are willing and happy to sit in the majority of lessons, take notes and actively supervise and support daily practice. A minimum of 20 - 30 minutes practice on at least 5 days a week (but ideally, daily) at home is expected from every pupil.
- Children and teenagers between about 4 - 18 years who have had violin lessons before, who have strong foundations, and play at a good level for their age.
- Approximate minimum standard expected for pupils joining teddingtonviolin: Ages 7-8: Initial - Grade 1. Ages 8- 9 Grade 2-3, Ages 9-11: Grades 3-5, Ages 11+ Grade 5 or higher, merit or distinction level.
It is absolutely not necessary to actually have taken any graded exams - this is just to give an idea about the level of playing expected. - If violin is not the first study instrument, a good level on another instrument (e.g. piano) is taken into account.
- My studio is most suited for pupils for whom the violin and music in general are a priority, not just another activity.
- Please do not hesitate to contact me for further details if you are not sure.
- Adult students: I prefer to keep lessons for adults more flexible and relaxed. Currently, I have only extremely limited spaces for adult students during normal school hours. Please feel free to contact me to see if we can arrange something and include some information about your playing and availability.
Waiting list:
- Once an application has been reviewed, accepted applicants will be placed on the waiting list.
- The offer of a place is not automatic and not necessarily in order of registration. It depends not only on the availability of a slot, but also on the outcome of the assessment/consultation lesson *charged at the usual rate
- When a slot opens, potential families will be notified of the availability and an assessment/consultation lesson will be scheduled. For students aged 9 or older, prior violin study is required.
- The placement of the applicant will be considered upon the following:
Age, ability and natural aptitude for the instrument, timetable availability for lessons, level of interest, high degree of commitment to practise every day (10 and under: supervised by parents) demonstrated, a genuine desire to learn to play the violin well, with good technique and a beautiful tone, and to explore its rich repertoire and not just three exam pieces. A willingness to take part in ensembles, violin days (usually on Sundays or during Christmas holdays) and pupils concerts in addition to the weekly lessons. Suitable selected pupils will be encouraged to participate in festivals and competitions.
